Deacon Update

Easter 2017

Dear Deacons, Candidates and Wives,

As we approach Holy Week, I pray that this Lenten Season has

brought you and your loved ones renewed hope and may your

Easter be filled with special blessings.

Ministry of Lector:

Prior to their successful completion of their Spring semester,

our 9 Deacon Candidates will be attending their Candidates’

Day of Reflection for the Ministry of Lector on April 29, 2017.

They will be installed as Readers on Tuesday eveningJune 6

2017, at the Holy Name of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, in New

Bedford, beginning at 7PM.  Most Reverend Edgar M. daCunha,

S.D.V., Bishop of Fall River, will be the principal celebrant.

Please keep our Candidates in your prayers as they continue on

their journey to the Diaconate.

This evening will also serve as our Annual Convocation of

Deacons and Wives.  Attendance is mandatory for all active

deacons and their wives, unless excused by me.

Diaconate Ordination:

Please note that Bishop daCunha will ordain three men to the

Diaconate on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 11AM at St. Mary’s

Cathedral.

Since the Rite of Ordination includes welcome by other deacons,

it is my hope that many of you will be able to attend the ordination

to welcome our brothers to the order of Deacon.

Please reserve the above dates on your calendars.

In Memoriam:

Please remember all deceased members of our diaconal

community and their families in your prayers, especially:

Deacon Lawrence St. Pierre, who died on March 20, 2017.

As you are aware, on the death of a deacon, the Office

commissions a chalice for the missions. The chalice is

engraved with the name of the deceased deacon. I feel that

this is more appropriate and longer lasting than flowers.

Holy Week Office Hours:

The Permanent Diaconate Office will be closed during Holy

Week on Good Friday.

Jackie will be away from the office April 19-21, 2017

In case of an emergency, please contact me at St. Mary’s

Rectory, 508-995-3593

With every good wish for the blessings of the Easter Season,

I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Msgr. John J. Oliveira, PA
