The Diocese of Fall River
12th Diaconate Class Announced
His Excellency, the Most Reverend Edgar M. da Cunha, Bishop of Fall River, has authorized the formation of a new class for Permanent Deacons beginning in the Fall of 2027.
Those interested in pursuing the vocation of the diaconate, scheduled to begin the Aspirancy phase in the Fall of 2027, are invited to submit a preliminary application which will be available here shortly. .
Info Nights will be held around the ciocese and via Zoom beginning in October, 2025. These general Information meetings will delve into the process of formation of a deacon for the Diocese of Fall River. The info nights will be held at several locations in the diocese and via Zoom.

Five CEU credits will be awarded for attending this event. The office will also cover the registration fee if you register via the button below.
Spouses are also invited and we will cover their registration fee also.

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!Ordination of the 10th Diaconate Class - 2023
The Diocese of Fall River welcomes new Deacons as Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha, S.D.V., ordains 15 men to the Permanent Diaconate and one man to the Transitional Diaconate on Saturday, May 20, in St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River. The diaconate is the first of three ranks in ordained ministry in the Catholic Church. Deacons preparing for the priesthood are transitional deacons. Those not planning to be ordained priests are called permanent deacons. Functionally, there is no difference between a permanent deacon and a transitional deacon. They share the same diaconal roles and responsibilities.

The Permanent Diaconate in the Diocese of Fall River
Formation for the Permanent Diaconate is guided by the National Directory for the Formation, Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons in the United States. To that end, the Sacred Order of Deacons is to be "a driving force for the Church's service or diakonia toward the local Christian communities, and as a sign or sacrament of the Lord Christ himself, who came not to be served but to serve." The Deacon's ministry of service is linked with the missionary dimension of the church. The missionary efforts of the Deacon will embrace the ministry of the word, the liturgy and works of charity which, in their turn, are carried into daily life.
